Honomanu and Honokohau Bays are the best place to start with reliable surf up to about 8 or 9 feet most of the time, even in the winter when other beaches close out. In the summer surf can be slack. So the locals break out the short boards and boogie off the Lahaina Breakwater where it's rumored, the best tricks troll up the best dates. La Perouse Bay on the South Coast is the other moderately reliable 'no wave' choice out past Makena, but if the surf's down, why not try SCUBA, SNUBA or Snorkel instead. The last of the 'Hono's' Honolua Bay doesn't suit goofy footers, because the truly great break is to the right and can mount to 20 feet in the winter, when this is the spot to come with a local. The wrong route out, on inattention in, means you can get slammed between the waves and the cliff. Ho'okipa near Paia is also a decent surfing spot lately taken over by windsurfers.
