It's a good 45-minute to hour drive out towards Makaha leeward side of the island, and it the surf's up it can take longer. Makaha is one of the best big surf venues on Oahu. The sprawling low buildings here run along two rather mannerly 18 hole courses with just enough relief to make golf interesting. Staying here is equally interesting with lovely rooms, a decent restaurant and several thousand peacocks that make enough noise early in the morning to supposedly raise the local birthrate. The main reason Makaka nosed out the other courses is the fee schedule. Locals play the Ali Wai or other courses early and then head out to Makaha where the $160 green fee drops to $90 at noon and to an amazing$50 from 2:30 until closing with a cart included.
