Location:
 Big Island

  Overview

If you think your adventures end once the sun sets, think again. Both on land and at sea, nighttime on Hawaii's Big Island offers spectacular scenery, made even more dramatic by the island's famously brilliant night sky. Hundreds of visitors each night make the pilgrimage down Chain of Craters road, where molten lava meets the ocean, sending steam plumes of several hundred feet billowing into the sky. Truly a magical experience, viewing the volcano at night is often the best way to see Kilauea Volcano's awesome power and beauty. Closer to park headquarters, visitors can also set out (with a flashlight, of course) about an hour before sunset to Puu Huluhulu, a forested cindercone that commands a breathtaking view of the eruption site. Lit only by the glow of the moon, night hiking back along the trail completes the adventure and gives you a chance to feel what it might have been like for ancient Hawaiians to navigate these trails with just the elements to guide them.
