  Overview

Big Island hunting in Mauna Kea or Pokakuloa requires winning a lottery unless you book a private hunt on the McCandless Ranch (808-3328-2389) for sheep, wild boar, goats, pheasants, turkey and gamebirds. A couple of other outfitters offer private hunts for sheep, goats or wild boars year round and gamebirds in November and January. There is, it should be noted, no hunting for any native Hawaiian species. All of the above and a host of others are introduced. Bird hunting with several kinds of francolin, two or three kinds of pheasants, four kinds of quail, three or four kinds of grouse, chukars, huns, turkeys and more can provide good shooting if you've access.
