  Overview       Inside Tips

Overlooking Honolulu from Makiki Heights Drive on Tantalus Mountain, the Contemporary Museum is one of the latest additions to the Hawaii art scene. It was opened in 1988, having been formally run as an annex to the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The museum is housed in a home formally belonging to Mrs. Charles Montague Cooke, of the same family that founded the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The museum offers a soothing mixture of graceful Hawaiian-style architecture and 3½ acres of natural landscaping, with stunning views of Honolulu and Diamond Head below. The gardens alone are well worth the visit. Mostly Japanese in inspiration they were originally designed between 1928 and 1941 by Reverend K. H. Inagaki, a Honolulu minister with a special interest in landscape design, and later restored in 1980. Sculptures both from the museum's collection and on loan are installed in various locations on the grounds. Due to the museum’s rather limited space, the exhibits on display are rotated regularly. This collection includes over 1300 works of contemporary art, covering such diverse forms as sculpture, painting, metalwork, and collage. Artists represented in the collection include; Josef Albers, Mark Tobey, Sam Francis, Louise Nevelson, Jim Dine, Jasper johns, Richard Diebenkorn, and Nancy Reddin Kienholz. A highlight of the collection is David Hockney's walk-in environment inspired by the Maurice Ravel opera, L’enfant et les Sortiliges (The Child and the Magic Spells). Local Hawaiian artists are also represented.
