Overview
A “must see” is Waianapanapa State Park where you will find lava tubes, fresh water caves and a black-sand beach surrounded by lush, green foliage. Located near Hana Airport, the 122-acre park is also a great place for hiking, camping and picnics.
If you’re not a confident driver or don’t like being isolated, don’t take the back way out of Hana. Highway 31 is full of potholes, unpaved in places and frequently washes out in the rain. Instead backtrack your way up Highway 360 back up the Road to Hana.
Practice aloha when driving the Road to Hana. Yield to other drivers on one-way bridges and don’t honk your horn as it is considered rude in Hawaii. If you notice a long train of cars lining up behind you, pull over and let them pass.
Fill up the gas tank in Paia as there are no gas stations on the Road to Hana and the ones in Hana close at 6p.m.
There are several small places to buy snacks along the Road to Hana but your best bet is to bring a picnic lunch. In Hana there are a few small snack shops as well as a few higher-end restaurants. |
