  Overview       Inside Tips

The view from the Heiau is always inspiring, but it can be especially so at sunset. You may want to time your visit to watch the day wane over the North Shore in an incredible display of color. The mountain range in front of you is the Wianae Range, and if it's not bashfully hiding behind clouds as is typical, you may see Mt. Ka'ala, at 4025 feet Oahu's highest mountain.

It is especially advised not to disturb the offerings of ti leaf wrapped stones, leis, or fruit and not to step on the Heiaus stones as this is considered highly offensive. Feel free to pick a ti leaf and make your own offering though.

You may be interested to know that early in 2000 the Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau had a scare in the form of a landslide, when a portion of the cliff near the Heiau, and overlooking Kamehameha Highway below, gave way as a result of eons of erosion. A temporary road had to be built across the sands of Waimea Beach! Engineering work to extend the highway and reinforce the fragile cliff concerned local Hawaiians, fearing the sacred Heiau land might be disturbed. All ended well, however. The Heiau remained undisturbed and the reinforced cliff and protective netting along the highway’s edge was completed without incident.

It's easy to get to the Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau by bus or car. Simply gain Kamehameha Highway and head towards the North Shore. At the Foodland in Pupukea turn towards the hills on Pupukea Road and head about 2/3 of a mile up a switchback road to the Heiau. For its journey along the North Shore Kamehameha Highway is a two-lane road, and can get pretty crowded on the weekend when the surf is up. If possible, plan your trip out on a weekday to avoid the crunch.

By bus you should catch number 52 in front of Ala Moana Center and let the driver know where you want to go. Be warned the journey may take up to two hours, but at $1 it may be the cheapest, and most scenic, 30 mile rides around
