Overview
Inside Tips
Even if you miss the tour, don’t miss stopping by the lobby of the Kona Hotel. It offers a continual exhibit with interesting murals and paintings of members of the Hawaiian monarchy and scenes from life at Kamakanonu Bay under King Kamehameha. The exhibit also displays traditional carvings and artifacts, not to mention a stuffed 1,200 pound Blue Marlin!
You may be interested to know that the adjacent pier and smaller beach next to the compound is the starting point for the Ironman Triathlon"s swim and bike events. If you"re in town in early October you can watch the insanity begin.
If a visit to Kamakahonu has just whetted your appetite, docents from the Kona Historical Society lead 1 1/2-hour walking tours of Kailua-Kona starting at King
Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. This more in depth tour covers not only the "Ahu"ena Heiau, but nearby
Hulihe'e Palace, Moku'aikaua Church (Hawaii"s oldest church), among other sites. The $10 tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday at 9:30, and Friday at 1:30. Phone the Society at (808) 323-3222.
The beach at Kamakahonu is quite tranquil and pleasant, and perfect especially if you have kids. Even if the Kona Hotel is above your price range you can enjoy the beach for free. |
